Wall drying rack: which length suits which household

In a family with two children, the washing machine runs twice in a row on Saturday. The first load is already hanging, and only two free lines are left for the second. So the towels end up over chair backs and doors.

In short

The right length depends on three questions: how much laundry you hang at once, how wide the free wall is, and how much space there is in front of it. The wall drying rack in our shop comes in 70, 100 and 120 cm. A single household is often fine with the shortest length, two people usually suit 100 cm, and a family with children hangs up most comfortably with 120 cm.

The three lengths compared

70 cm 100 cm 120 cm
Total line 3.5 m 6 m 8.4 m
Projection when pulled out 35 cm 50 cm 60 cm
Distance from the wall, folded 2.8 cm 2.8 cm 2.8 cm
Load 5 kg per rod 5 kg per rod 5 kg per rod

All three lengths come in white, cappuccino, anthracite and black.

Question 1: how much laundry hangs at once?

How much line one load needs depends on your drum and on what you wash. Bed sheets take more room than socks. The easiest way is to check on your next laundry day: count the metres of line on your current drying rack and see whether everything fits or whether some of it ends up on the radiator.

Many homes have just one resident. In Germany, a little over two in five households are single-person households1. In cities with 100,000 inhabitants or more, roughly one person in four lives alone1. For these households the load is usually smaller, and the shortest length has enough room.

Question 2: how wide is the free wall?

Measure the wall from edge to edge and leave a little space at the sides so you can hang things comfortably. Good spots are the wall above the bathtub, a niche in the hallway or the area next to the window. Also check that the wall can take the load. The wall drying rack is mounted once with a drill, and screws and wall plugs are included.

Question 3: how much space is in front of it?

When pulled out, the wall drying rack reaches 35, 50 or 60 cm into the room, depending on the length. You also need room in front of it to stand and hang the laundry. In a narrow hallway, the shorter length is therefore sometimes the better choice, even if there is more laundry.

Which length suits which household

Living alone in a small flat: The 70 cm length with 3.5 m of line suits you. It also fits in a narrow hallway or next to the bathroom door.

Two people: The 100 cm length with 6 m of line suits you. In many two-person homes, that is enough for the clothes and towels from one load.

Family with children: The 120 cm length with 8.4 m of line suits you. Bed linen and towels have room, and on Saturday the radiator stays free.

Little space but lots of laundry: Choose 100 cm above the bathtub rather than 120 cm in a tight hallway. What matters is that you can still stand comfortably in front of it.

The wall drying rack from our shop

The wall drying rack is made of steel and aluminium with a corrosion-resistant coating. When the washing machine is done, you pull it out. When the laundry is dry, you fold it away, and it sits 2.8 cm from the wall. The hallway is a hallway again.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the length later?
No, each length is a separate model. Measure the wall and the space in front of it before you buy.

How much does the wall drying rack hold?
Each rod holds up to 5 kg.

Do I need a drill?
Yes. The wall drying rack has to hang firmly on a load-bearing wall, so you drill once. Screws and wall plugs are included.

Does the wall drying rack fit above the bathtub?
Often, yes. Measure the wall above the tub and check that you can stand comfortably in front of it while hanging the laundry.
